BMW has been hard at work this past year, producing 2020 BMW 8-Series, the new flagship coupe that is going to revive BMW 8-Series nameplate. Today we got first spy images of the coupe model that was confirmed back in May, but reportedly also in the pipeline are M8 performance version, BMW 8-Series Convertible and maybe even an BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe.
2020 BMW 8 Series Exterior, Interior
From what we can tell from the spy shots, this new model is set to feature a low roof and wide, muscular shoulders that bare a strong resemblance to the design of Aston Martin DB9. Another cue lifted straight from the DB9 is the 2+2 format seating.
BMW has been planning a large coupe like model for over a decade now, and they even previewed a version of it back in 2013 with Gran Lusso Coupe concept. This concept was developed with Pininfarina, the Italian design house that is reportedly also in charge of some of the the finer design elements of the new BMW 8-Series car model.
The new 2020 BMW 8-Series is set to feature the fiber-infused CLAR platform that first premiered last year in the new BMW 7-Series. This means that BMW 8-Series will offer a relatively low curb weight for a vehicle of its statue, but it also means compatibility with electrified powertrains. Moreover, look out for the latest advancements from the world of high-tech, including next generation gesture control.
2020 BMW 8 Series Engine, Performance
BMW is yet to announce the powertrain details for their new 2020 BMW 8-Series, but some of the company’s recent trademark filings suggest that we should expect to see V-8, V-12, as well as M Performance options. These not so secret filings included “850”, “860” and “M850”.
This means that the V-12 models will most likely come with the twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter engine that is capable of delivering up to 600 horsepower and can currently be found powering the latest M760i xDrive. The M8 variant should, however, feature the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, that is also good for about 600 horsepower.
2020 BMW 8 Series Release Date, Prices
The new 2020 BMW 8-Series will be built at BMW plant in Dingolfing, Germany, with production starting by the end of next year, possibly early 2019. This all leads us to believe that BMW 8-Series will be introduced as a 2020 model.
Some of its main competition will be comprised of the likes of Lexus LC, Maserati GranTurismo and Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, and we expect the new model will be priced accordingly. Considering the its main competitors are priced from $50,000-$60,000 dollars, you can expect the new BMW 8-Series to go for about the same.
